alfredo sauce in a small jar overflowing

I prefer to make our alfredo sauce from scratch because I can control the ingredients. Plus, I think the homemade alfredo tastes much better than the stuff you can buy in a jar. Since I have to watch how much sodium I consume, it’s nice to be able to control the amounts used in my cooking. This made from scratch alfredo sauce recipe lets you decide how much or how little seasonings to add, and couldn’t be easier to make.

Homemade Alfredo Sauce Ingredients

  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 1 cup cream, or whole milk would work too
  • 3/4 cup Parmesan cheese
  • 2 small cloves or 1 large clove garlic, minced
  • 1/2 tsp dried parsley
  • Salt and Pepper to taste

Can I Use Milk Instead of Cream in Alfredo Sauce

Yes, you can substitute the heavy cream for whole milk. The consistency may be slightly thinner, but shouldn’t be noticeable in the end. If you’d like to save the fat and calories then opt for whole milk instead.

How to Make Homemade Alfredo

Start by melting butter in a medium saucepan over medium-low heat. Once the butter is melted, increase the heat and slowly pour in the heavy cream or whole milk. Bring the alfredo sauce to a low boil, stirring continuously to avoid scald. Reduce the heat to a simmer and cook for about 5 minutes, or until the sauce thickens. Once the homemade alfredo has thickened, remove it from the heat and whisk in grated Parmesan cheese and seasonings.

Ways to Use Homemade Alfredo Sauce

Serve this homemade alfredo sauce recipe over your favorite type of pasta. Add in some breaded chicken tenders or grilled chicken tenders for a heartier meal. You can also use homemade alfredo as a dip for breadsticks, as a pizza sauce or over some spaghetti squash. Any way you choose to serve, it is delicious.
