Last week, while I was at Target, I stumbled across these cork board squares.  I nearly jumped for joy when I found them and saw that they were only $7.99 for a 4 pack.  I’ve been on the lookout for something functional I could put over my desk, so I quickly snatched these babies up.

The only issue is that I hate the way plain cork boards look.  They are so boring as is!  So I brainstormed for how I could transform them.  Of course, there is the ever popular method of painting them, but I didn’t want to paint all 4.  Then I remembered all of that leftover wall paper from Graham & Brown, Inc. I had from when I transformed my bookcase earlier in the year.  It was perfect!  Of course if you don’t have wall paper you could use fabric as well.

Supplies:

Cork boards

Wall paper or fabric

Scissors

Hot glue gun

Paint

Paint brush

First I tackled the 2 boards I planned on covering in wall paper.  This was really easy to do!  I sat the cork board on the back of the wall paper and cut around it leaving 2″ to fold over and glue down.  You would do the same thing if using fabric.

For the other two, I painted on two coats of coral paint I used in my mail box earlier in the year.  It’s the perfect contrast to the silver, gold, and white wall paper!

Once those were dry, I just used Command picture hanging strips to mount them above my desk.  Since the cork boards are so light, and won’t be used to hang anything too heavy, these picture hanging strips worked perfectly!

Next I had to embellish the boards a little bit with push pins and clips.

The white flower push pins, and coral flower clothespins I found at Michael’s.  The gold clothespins I found in Target’s Dollar Spot (love that section!).  The other coral flower push pins I made by hot gluing a paper flower to a regular push pin(see below).

Overall I really like how they turned out.  It’s an easy way to transform plain old cork boards to fit in with any decor–functional art I like to call it.
