Welcome to the 2017 Ornament Exchange & Blog Hop! This year, there are 47 amazing bloggers participating in the exchange. The rules of the challenge were simple: be partnered with a fellow blogger, create a handmade ornament for $15 or under, create a tutorial, and ship the ornament off to a new home!

I was partnered up with Christene from Keys to Inspiration this year! I actually met Christene at the Haven Blogging Conference back in July, so it was fun to be partnered up with someone I could actually put face to! Christene described her decorating style to me as a clean and simple mix of traditional and modern. She is drawn to mixtures of wood and white, and a lot of gray tones, but she does like to use deeper reds when it comes to decorating for the holidays.

Check out the tutorial below to see how I made her this mini wood framed sign ornament.

Mini Framed Sign Ornament

Supplies you’ll need:

The first thing I did was paint the wood plaque with Americana Decor Chalky Paint in the color Everlasting. It took two coats to get good coverage. Then I painted each letter of the word “Merry” in a dark red acrylic paint.

Next I cut 4 pieces of 1×2 to fit around the white wood plaque. To do this I simply made two 6″ cuts to fit the top and bottom length, and then cut two longer pieces at 7 1/2″ so they would butt up to the shorter pieces once assembled.

Then I sanded each 1×2 and applied 2 coats of Rust-Oleum Weathered Gray stain. This is my favorite gray stain because it gives off a nice bluish hue when it’s dry.

Once the 1×2’s had dried, I glued them to the white wood plaque using Gorilla Glue, to create a frame. Wood clamps help keep the pieces in place while the glue dries.

Of course no mini framed sign ornament is complete without having a way to hang it right? I decided to use little eyelets and some twine to give Christene a way to hang the ornament. But she could also use it to hang on her wall too if she doesn’t want to put it on the tree. To install the eyelets, I made a small starting hole with the drill and then screwed the eyelets in by hand.

Then I just cut a piece of twine to the right length and tied each end through the eyelets.

The last step was to glue down the letters I painted previously. I was going to just use regular Gorilla Glue, but decided to try out their brush on Super Glue instead. Since the surface I was working with was so small, the brush really came in handy.

All I had to do was press down firmly on the letters and the glue dried fairly quickly. It took no time at all to glue them all down.

The last thing I did was add these cute little wood wreath embellishments that I found at Target. I only wish I had picked up more of them! They are already out of stock in my store.

This mini wood framed sign ornament turned out exactly how I had envisioned! I hope Christene enjoys it as much as I did making it for her.

Love this? Pin it for later:
