How to Make a Valentine’s Day Ribbon Wreath

What you’ll need:

You can see in the above photo, that I started by taking 2 pieces of floral wire to make my heart shape.  I attached them together with floral tape, but you could twist them together.

Next, I cut my ribbon into 12″ long strips.  You can cut them longer, or shorter if you so desire. This length seemed to work best to tie the ribbon on, because of the type I used. If you were using regular satin ribbons, you could probably get away with cutting them shorter.

Start tying on your ribbons using a lark’s head knot. You can see in the pictures just how I did that. Start by folding your ribbon in half, then feed the loose ends through the loop around the wire and pull tight.  Voila!

You can do one knot, or repeat the steps to make it a double.  With tulle ribbon, I found the double knot helped keep it from coming undone. Again, it will depend on what ribbon you use.

Just continue going around the wire, until it is all covered. This is where your patience will come in handy. Turn on the TV and just get to work!

Since it is so lightweight, hanging it on the front door isn’t exactly appropriate. Not only that, but I don’t think my husband would enjoy seeing this plastered on our front door. It is just a tad kitschy to parade on the front door.

Instead, I did the next best thing–hung it on the staircase so he sees it when he first walks in!

  1. About how big did you make your heart? And could you estimate how much ribbon you used? I’m thinking of making several of these for the ladies I visit with Meals on Wheels.

    1. Heather, I’d estimate that the heart was about 12″ at the widest part (sorry I actually gave mine to a friend so I can’t measure it). And as for the ribbon I used probably around 15 yards (yikes!) BUT you could cut the strips shorter if you wanted, it would change the look of the wreath slightly, but would save on the ribbon. Also making a smaller version of the heart would save on ribbon as well since it wouldn’t take as much to cover it. A 6″ heart would still be pretty and you could make two wreaths with the same amount of ribbon. I hope that helps!

  2. Hello cute lady! I’m loving it. Pinned and tweeted. Thank you so much for partying with us. I hope to see you tonight at 7 pm. We love to party with you! Happy Monday! Lou Lou Girls

  3. Your ribbon wreath is so pretty. I love those splashes of gold and white! You cannot beat free, especially when it turns out so nice!
You husband won’t forget Valentines Day with this reminder 🙂

  4. What a cute wreath! I love how light and soft it looks. I like the variation of shades of color. My husband brought some heavy wire home the other day and asked if I could use if for “making something.” My first thought was that could be a wreath in no time. My second thought was wait, when did he start thinking about my craft needs!
