And by around here, I don’t mean The Kolb Corner–I mean with my husband and I. I mentioned a few times that we made an unexpected trip to Illinois, and I also told you my husband started a new job this week. It certainly has been an interesting, and exciting, few weeks.
My husband recently accepted a position with a company that is located in both San Antonio and Austin. For the first few weeks he will be doing training in San Antonio, and then will be working third shift at the Austin location. Eventually–whether it be in a month, or 6 months–we will be moving to San Antonio for him to be with his team permanently. While I’m not exactly looking forward to the third shift schedule (been there, done that), I am excited for him because this is a job I think he will actually love. There has been a great lack of excitement for him in his last 3 positions, and I’m ready for him to actually enjoy going to work.
For me, I’ll be looking for a part-time job in the San Antonio area once we find out exactly when we will be moving. I’m excited that he has allowed me to spend more time working on The Kolb Corner! I am also ecstatic because we will be BUYING A HOUSE! WooHoo! I’m so thankful we won’t be renting anymore. Not only is owning your home freeing as far as projects, decorating, updates, etc, but it is a much better financial decision. Here in Austin, and in San Antonio too, the rental market is outrageous! We are paying nearly double what a mortgage would be, in rent. That is a lot of money to just throw away every month. Not to mention how expensive pet fees and deposits are when you have 4–one of them being a large dog!!
So yes, we will be home owners again! But, we will still be in Texas :/ I guess I just need to learn to live with the heat, and get over not really having a true fall. I’m sure I won’t be complaining come Winter. I’ll also have to figure out a solution to dealing with scorpions and rattlesnakes 😉
As for our unexpected trip to Illinois…
Since my husband accepted a new position, he decided to make a last minute trip up to see family before starting the new job. We hadn’t seen our families in 9 months and we were both getting very homesick. It just so happened, my dad had an accident while pressure washing his house, and shattered his heel. We are talking totally disfigured. He was scheduled to have surgery the week my husband was going up there. Thanks to some very generous co workers for covering my shifts and taking care of our fur babies–I was able to go too. I am so thankful I got to be there.
He shattered his heel in several spots, and actually had 3 fragments of bone displaced. OUCH! The surgeons talked of using cadaver bones, and possibly even fusing his heel and ankle to make it permanently immobile. Thankfully, the surgery went very smoothly, and they did not have to do either of those things. Now, even though it went great, he still has a long road ahead of him. He will need 6 weeks of physical therapy, and will be put in a walking boot in about 2 weeks. My dad is one that is always busy doing something, so it has been very hard for him to take it easy. He had surgery the Friday before Labor Day, and went to work that Tuesday! That is how stubborn he is!
While we were in Illinois, we also got to have a big family cookout at my in laws property. It was beautiful out there, and the weather was perfect. I am thankful that both of our families get along with each other so well so we can get together like that.
It was also nice just to spend some time around my childhood home. My mom has always been a gardener, and while most things were past season for blooms, it was amazing to see just how green everything was!
I also got to spend some time with my one of oldest friends. We have been close since high school, and it was nice catching up. It was also perfect timing for her son’s birthday–8 years old, I can’t believe it!!
I’ll keep ya’ll posted on our timeline for moving–and of course on the home buying process. I can’t wait to be home owners again!
